Wood Refinishing

Double H Gunsmithing offers stock and wood refinishing for rifles, shotguns, and other firearms with wooden furniture. Customers come to us to refresh worn or weather-checked wood, repair handling marks before a new finish, or bring an older stock back to a clean, serviceable appearance after metalwork is complete.

Woodwork takes careful preparation and drying time, so it usually runs longer than general repair jobs. Please contact us to discuss your stock, the look you want, timeline, and pricing before work begins.

What wood refinishing can include

We can strip old stocks and sand them down for a full refinish when that is what the job needs. Typical work may also include cleaning and assessing the wood, raising dents where practical, further surface preparation, staining when desired, applying finish coats, and rubbing out or oiling to the sheen you want. Exact steps depend on the wood, the existing finish, how deep the wear goes, and whether repairs are needed first.

If the firearm also needs metal refinishing or mechanical repairs, we will talk through the order of work. Completing metalwork before final wood finish often keeps the stock from being marked up again during assembly.

Finish options

Tell us which look you want when you drop off or ship the firearm. We will match the finish level to the stock and the rest of the restoration when that matters.

Semi-inlets and stock making

We do not make stocks from scratch. We can perform final fit and finish on a 95% semi-inlet that you supply, bringing the stock to fit the barreled action and completing the finish work to the standard we agree on.

For stock-making services, we refer customers to Gunville.com (Silver Hill Gun Stocks). After you have a stock or semi-inlet in hand, we can handle final fit and finish here when that is what you need.

Checkering

We offer checkering, but only as part of a major restoration project. Checkering is time-consuming, so we do not take it on as a stand-alone small job. If your project already includes substantial stock or restoration work, we can discuss checkering as part of that scope.

Lead times

Wood refinishing and related stock work take longer than most shop repairs because of stripping, preparation, finish coats, and curing. Current planning times for woodwork are listed on our home page lead times table, including Standard, Priority, and Lightning options when those tiers are available for your job. Times can change with shop load and materials. We will confirm an expected window when we accept the work.

What to bring or send

Please bring the firearm fully unloaded, with magazines empty when applicable. Tell us whether you want matte, satin, or high polish, whether the stock should be stripped and sanded for a full refinish, whether dents and handling marks should be worked out as far as practical, and whether metal refinishing or other repairs should be done in the same visit. If you are shipping the firearm to us, follow our usual FFL transfer process on the Transfers page first.

Pricing depends on the stock, how much repair and preparation are required, and the finish system we agree on. Shop rates and the cash or check discount are described on our home page.
